A packaging error at Greggs has turned a simple frozen meal into a potential health concern. The popular bakery chain discovered their Iceland-exclusive Steak Bakes actually contain Sausage, Bean and Cheese Melts instead – bringing an unexpected ingredient into people’s homes.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) raised the alarm about sulphites, preservatives commonly found in many processed foods, being present but not listed on the package. “This means sulphites is not declared on the label; therefore the product is a possible health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites,” states the FSA’s advisory notice.
According to Allergy UK’s information in the source, sulphites can trigger reactions in sensitive individuals. The risk is notably higher for people with asthma. While reactions are usually mild, there have been rare reports of serious allergic responses, including anaphylaxis.

The mix-up shows how food labeling protects health. When ingredients aren’t correctly listed, it poses potential risks to people with sensitivities. Proper ingredient labeling helps everyone make safe food choices.
