Moderna Receives $590M for Bird Flu Vaccine Development

The U.S. government is investing $590 million in Moderna's avian influenza vaccine development program to accelerate protection against H5N1.

This funding builds on an earlier investment of $176 million in July 2024 highlighting the urgency of fighting bird flu.

Since April 2024, there have been 67 reported cases of bird flu in the United States, with the majority being farm workers. And one person died in Louisiana.

Moderna will use mRNA technology that has proven effective in COVID-19 Vaccines. To develop the experimental vaccine mRNA-1018.
