A major egg recall has been issued across five Canadian provinces after testing detected possible Salmonella contamination. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has ordered the removal of specific egg batches from six major brands: Compliments, Foremost, Golden Valley Eggs, IGA, No Name, and Western Family.

The recall spans Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. Affected products have specific lot codes that consumers should check against their purchases. While no illnesses have been reported, the CFIA emphasizes the serious nature of potential Salmonella infection.

“Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” the CFIA stated in their official release. This invisible threat particularly concerns public health officials, as Salmonella affects approximately 88,000 Canadians annually.

Salmonella infection can cause fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. The risk is particularly high for vulnerable populations. “Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections,” the CFIA warned.

The CFIA advises consumers to:

  • Check egg cartons against specific lot codes (available on the CFIA website)
  • Return affected products to the store of purchase
  • Dispose of recalled eggs
  • Contact healthcare providers if illness occurs after consumption

This recall adds to Canada’s history of Salmonella-related food safety incidents, which have previously affected various products including fruits, frozen corn, and pet food. The CFIA has launched a food safety investigation and is working with retailers to remove affected products from store shelves.

The CFIA’s testing protocols identified this contamination risk before any reported illnesses. Maintaining food safety requires continuous monitoring and quick action when risks are identified.

Consumers seeking additional information about affected products can contact their retailers or visit the CFIA website for detailed lot code information.
