Animal Activists Divide Over Kylie Jenner’s Lion Head Gown at Paris Couture Week

PETA has come to the defense of Kylie Jenner after the reality star faced backlash for wearing a black velvet gown featuring a large, realistic-looking lion’s head during the Schiaparelli Haute Couture show at the start of Paris Couture Week. The outfit, which was made of fake materials, sparked criticism from animal lovers and fans who felt it promoted hunting and was disturbing in its realism. Animal activists divide over Kylie Jenner’s lion head gown at Paris couture week.

Schiaparelli’s spring 2023 couture collection, which was showcased at Paris Couture Week, features realistic animal heads as a nod to the three beasts of Dante’s ‘Inferno’, including leopard, wolf and lion heads. Kylie Jenner, who wore the lion head, had emphasized the head was not real and “manmade” in her Instagram post. Schiaparelli defended its designs on their Instagram account, stating that the animal heads were crafted from hand-sculpted foam and wool and silk faux fur, and were hand-painted to look as life-like as possible, as a way to celebrate the glory of the natural world.

Kylie Jenner’s black velvet gown, designed by Schiaparelli, which featured a lifelike lion head, sparked accusations of promoting animal cruelty and glamorizing trophy hunting. However, some animal rights activists defended the collection. The same dress was later worn by Irina Shayk on the runway. Additionally, other animal-inspired designs were seen in the show, including a faux-taxidermy snow leopard and a wolf modeled by Naomi Campbell. Schiaparelli shared a video on Instagram which highlighted the materials used to make the lion head, including hand-sculpted foam, wool and silk faux fur, and was hand-painted to look as life-like as possible.

While some criticized Schiaparelli’s animal-inspired designs for promoting animal cruelty and trophy hunting, others defended the brand, arguing that the designs were artistic and intentionally provocative. One individual commented that the purpose of haute couture is to be an art performance, a concept, shown on a person and that it’s art, and the concept here is Dante’s Inferno. The Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, which Schiaparelli’s controversial show kicked off, runs until January 26th.
