Killer Floods Wreak Brazilian City
It is like a war zone in Brazil as floods and mudslides caused deaths of more than 100 people in the picturesque city of Petropolis,68 kms(42 miles) north of Rio de Janeiro.
Petropolis is a prime tourist spot in Brazil with many scenic locations for travelers to revere.
The imagery that flooded the internet is very intense and many visuals are hard for viewers to digest.
Due to its geographical location, high velocity flood waves and mudslides have destroyed the locality.
Rescue workers are still working against time, searching for any remaining survivors among mud & wreckage after devastating flash floods and landslides hit the tourist town of 300,000 people.
Streets were turned into rivers and houses swept away when heavy storms dumped a month’s rain within three hours on the tranquil town in the hills.
Dozens are still reported missing, fears of rising death toll further sent firefighters and volunteers scrambling through the remains of houses washed away in torrents of mud, many of them in impoverished hillside slums.
It is the latest in a series of deadly storms to hit Brazil in the past three months, which experts say are being worsened by climate change.
The Petropolis city council has declared ‘a state of disaster ‘ and three days of mourning.
