Murder Hornets' Eradicated in U.S. After 5 Years

The northern giant hornet, Vespa mandarinia, has been declared eradicated in the United States since there have been no reported sightings since 2021

It was first discovered in British Columbia in 2019 and crossed into Washington state in the same year, with a serious threat to pollinators and agriculture.

DNA analysis reveals multiple introduction events, which are thought to have originated from shipping containers, though the mode of entry remains unknown.

Teams had to employ creative methods like radio tracking and specialized gear to locate and neutralize nests that hid underground.

Hornet attacks on honeybees were catastrophic, with colonies destroyed within less than 90 minutes and even beekeeper suits penetrated by their powerful stings.

Public reports were essential, leading to confirmed detections and eventual eradication efforts by local and federal agencies.

Surveillance continues in Kitsap County and through 2025 to guard against reinvasion, as seen with similar species in Spain.

The species was renamed "Northern Giant Hornet" to promote clarity and avoid fear or discrimination.
