August 19, 2024 – The world’s largest single capacity floating wind power platform, OceanX, recently set sail from Guangzhou on a groundbreaking 191-nautical-mile journey to the Yangjiang Mingyang Qingzhou IV offshore wind farm in Guangdong, China. Developed by Mingyang Smart Energy Group, this innovative 16.6 MW platform integrates two MySE8.3-180 wind turbines in a unique “V” shaped design, ushering in a new era of resilient, cost-effective deep-water wind energy.

With each turbine boasting an 8.3 MW capacity and expansive 597 feet (182 meters) blade diameter, OceanX is engineered to harness the immense wind potential found in waters 115 feet (35 meters) deep or greater. The platform’s ultra-high-performance concrete foundation provides exceptional durability, allowing it to withstand typhoon-force winds up to 161 mph (260 km/h) and towering 98 feet (30 meter) waves.

Once operational, OceanX is projected to generate an impressive 54 million kWh annually, sufficient to power 30,000 Chinese households.

Several cutting-edge innovations set OceanX apart. The adaptive single-point mooring system ensures stability and safety in extreme conditions, enabling the platform to ride even the most ferocious waves. A cable-stayed system enhances structural efficiency and adaptability, while the modular construction approach leveraging caisson pre-tensioning technology streamlines manufacturing and reduces costs.

Moreover, OceanX is capable of managing the total health of the turbine to optimize power generation efficiency. This sophisticated monitoring capability is crucial for efficient operation in challenging deep-sea environments.

OceanX’s launch comes amid a global surge in floating wind turbine development, as countries and companies seek to tap into the vast potential of deep-water wind resources. Europe has been at the forefront, with projects like GE’s 12-14.7 MW Haliade-X turbine in the Netherlands and the UK’s Dogger Bank Wind Farm, set to be the world’s largest offshore wind farm upon completion.
