The basic needs of mankind are food, clothing and shelter. Out of these three fundamental necessities two that are Cotton and Habitat are to be given prominence today, the 7 October 24.
Burkina Faso, Benin, Chad, and Mali led the African countries to promote Cotton by-products and their markets. The first World Cotton Day (WCD) was initiated in Geneva and it was observed on Oct 7, 2019.
At present, India holds the title of the largest producer of Cotton.Cotton is a natural fiber like no other.
Here are some of the reasons why:Cotton is a poverty alleviating crop in some of the least developed countries in the world, providing sustainable and decent employment to people across the globe.It degrades quickly compared with synthetic alternatives,decreasing the amount of plastics entering our waterways and helping to keep our oceans clean.

In the pre – independence era Gandhi led the Swadeshi (Indigenous) movement by spinning cloth on a charkha. Thus such a cloth is called Khadi. Khadi and Gandhi cap became symbols of India’s freedom struggle.So on this day let us ponder over the use of cotton and the improvement of towns and cities so that a better and cleaner world comes into existence.
