October 1: Celebrating 4 Global Events, Including the Surprising Rise in Life Expectancy for 900 Million Senior Citizens

Today is an important day for the international community. The following Days are observed and celebrated today: International Day of Older Persons 2024, International Coffee Day 2024, World Vegetarian Day 2024, and International Music Day 2024.

As medical aid and health facilities increase, the average span of life of a person has increased alongside in modern times. Older persons, especially above the age of 60, have certain special needs that they require in order to live a higher quality of life. Such people are called senior citizens. The medical care specialty that focuses on the health and well being of older adults is known as Geriatrics; Geriatricians are trained to provide patient-centered care that addresses the unique health concerns of older people.

The UN General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older People on December 14, 1990. The observance is meant to shine a focus on aging organizations and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) Programme on Ageing.

International Coffee Day is often observed as a day to celebrate the age-old beverage that is coffee, with enthusiastic coffee lovers taking part in events around the world. The first official date was agreed upon by the Member States of the ICO (International Coffee Organization) on October 1, since 2014. Coffee connoisseurs celebrate this occasion to convey the importance of coffee in our day-to-day lives. 

Today is also celebrated as World Vegetarian Day. It is a day of celebration established by the North American Vegetarian Society in 1977 and endorsed by the global community of vegetarianism. The Headquarters of North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS) is in Dolgeville, New York. The ISCON (International Society of Krishna Consciousness) founded by Bhakti Vedanta Swami Prabhupada has appreciated the efforts of NAVS to promote a vegetarian way of life. 

Thus, October 1 is also celebrated as International Music Day, a day established in 1975 by UNESCO. This day is a homage to musicians, music, and the numerous genres of song that people of all backgrounds contribute and enjoy in a manner that brings them together.

In short, today, we celebrate four special days namely: International Day of Older Persons, International Coffee Day, World Vegetarian Day, and International Music Day.
