The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has upgraded its assessment of the MadeGood granola bar recall, now classifying it as Class II due to potential metal contamination risks. The recall spans over 2 million cases of granola bars produced between January and November 2024.
Metal contamination was identified after Riverside Natural Foods Inc., MadeGood’s parent company, conducted an extensive investigation. The specific concern involves small, flat brush bristles from manufacturing equipment that could cause temporary health issues if consumed.
The recall covers popular varieties like Chocolate Chip, Mixed Berry, and Chocolate Drizzled flavors. These products were sold through major retailers including Target, Whole Foods, Wegmans, CVS, and Amazon.
“We are voluntarily recalling certain MadeGood granola bars as a precautionary measure,” Riverside Natural Foods stated in December when initiating the recall. “There is a very small risk that some of our granola bar products may contain a piece of metal.”
The FDA’s Class II designation indicates potential for “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.” While no injuries have been reported, the classification acknowledges risks like minor cuts or abrasions in the mouth or digestive tract if contaminated products are consumed.
Following its investigation, Riverside Natural Foods identified and corrected the manufacturing issue. The company has implemented new testing processes to prevent similar incidents. All affected retailers have been notified to remove the products from their shelves.

Consumers who have purchased MadeGood granola bars should check the UPC codes and best-by dates on their packages. Products within the recall range can be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.

This recall occurs amid increased attention to food safety. Earlier this month, FGF, LLC recalled 2,0176,614 cases of baked goods due to potential listeria contamination, while Union Seafoods issued a recall for select canned tuna products due to manufacturing defects in their “easy open” lids.
Consumers with questions about the recall can return affected products to their place of purchase. The interactive product checker above can help identify if specific MadeGood products are part of the recall.
